“The Backyard” in Boynton is a perfect place to relax
Wednesday, 09 April 2014 21:12

MENU
There are burgers, chicken wings and tacos made with pulled pork and steak. But let’s face it, you go here for the fish. Except, perhaps, on the weekends, when the brunch menu is eclectic, to say the least. We will definitely go back for, for instance, the blue and white (blueberry and white chocolate chip) pancakes and, file this under where do they get that: alligator sausage.

ATMOSPHERE
Only open just a few months, this place has instant personality and it’s a perfect addition to downtown Boynton Beach. The palm trees twined with twinkly colored lights, the mellow crowd, the band playing classic rock …. and when the chef walks by carrying a big whole fish in his arms, you know the fish is fresh. Air-conditioning lovers, take note: This is a 100 percent outdoor restaurant, with fans and misters to keep you comfortable. Food preparation takes place in a curvy silver Airstream trailer.

OUR FAVORITE FOOD/PRICE
We loved the grilled artisan romaine salad ($9), with a few surprise brussel sprouts thrown in. The guacamole ($11) is chunky and delightful, with multi-colored chips and plantain chips for dipping. Everything with fish in it was incredibly fresh and juicy: the fish sliders ($10) with big thick steak fries sprinkled with a dash of celery salt. We shared the sliders but almost fought over the fries. And the fish tacos ($9) were equally delightful.

REASON TO GO
The fish, the laid-back personality of the place, it all comes together in the best possible way. The fact that you almost have to stumble onto the place makes it feel like a real find. And it is.

SERVICE
Our waiter was quick to tell us what was good on the menu as well as the history of the place. It used to be a joint with a reputation – and a stripper pole. That’s all gone. All that’s left is good food and good karma.

NOISE LEVEL
When one of the several bands is playing, there is nowhere to go to avoid it, so no tete-a-tetes here, unless you can wait until the band takes a break.

KID FRIENDLY
There is food they will like, but this is really a place for grown-ups to relax.
