When you’ve reviewed an estimated 500 restaurants for the Neighborhood Post section in the past 15 years, the foods and restaurants begin to run together. Someone’s greasy burger blends right in with someone else’s cardboard-crusted pizza.
But sometimes – sometimes! – the meals can be memorable for a good reason. And sometimes the meals were very good, but for whatever reason the restaurant didn’t last.
Here are ten of my favorite foods from Boynton restaurants:
1. Island Shrimp Wrap: The Breakfast Shack, 3469 W. Boynton Beach Blvd. Juicy, cooked just right with tender shrimp, sautéed onions and peppers and pineapple. You can imagine yourself eating this on dock in the Keys. It’s called The Breakfast Shack, but this lunch item was a favorite.
2. Fried Calamari: Pho VN, 344 Old Congress Ave. We love calamari, and I must say the lightly fried, tender calamari at this little spot was wonderful. It’s a must-order when we go back there.
3. Barbecue: Troy’s BarBQ, 1017 N. Federal. When it’s cooked outside in giant barrel cookers, that’s a good sign to me. Ribs, chicken, you name it, the BBQ is good here no matter how you spell it. The rib tips are a special treat.
4. Boliche (pot roast): Guarapo Cuban Cuisine, 1795 N. Congress Ave. Ninety percent of the times that I go into a Cuban restaurant, I’m going to be eating pork. I ordered the boliche here and was served something special. Talk about comfort food, in any language. It was mouth watering.
5. Appetizers: Sweetwater Bar and Grill, 1507 S. Federal Highway. Korean BBQ tacos, spinach-artichoke dip with ciabatta crisps, bacon-bourbon wings, Cuban crostini with gruyere cheese and sweet plantains on it – wow, they were all wonderful. I even stopped to compliment the chef at the open kitchen on my way out.
6. Grilled Cheese Sandwiches: Melt, 1880 N. Congress Ave. If grilled cheese sandwiches are comfort food, you can’t get much more comfortable than here. They throw lots of other stuff in with the cheese, too, and it’s all very good.
7. Egg Rolls: Fon Shan, 4735 N. Congress Ave. You can get egg rolls at lots of places. Heck, you can even get them out of your freezer. But you’ll get great ones at Fon Shan.
8. Steak Sandwich, Between the Bun, 1035 Gateway Blvd. The Romanian tenderloin sandwich that we had there recently was amazing. It’s a little pricey, but the flavor was amazing on this tender piece of meat.
9. Bleu Cheese Coleslaw, Prime Catch, 700 E. Woolbright Ave. Yes, it sounds a little odd, but it was truly the best coleslaw I ever had, and one of the best side dishes I can recall.
10. Shrimp Parmesan, Dominic’s IV, 1790 N. Congress Ave. My wife was more adventurous on this evening, so she went with the shrimp dish. I usually think chicken or veal when I hear parmesan, but this entrée was a cheesy wonder.
